仪式 Yí Shì (2006)
for
percussion quartet: 8 Chinese toms, 2 simantras, wind chimes, 2 sets of
Indian bell strands, 5 woodblocks, 2 log drums, tam tam, Chinese cymbal
and 3 temple bells
NOTES
Yí Shì
means "ritual" or "ceremony" in Mandarin Chinese. I saw the
instruments above as a collection of "ethnic" instruments from very
different parts of the world looking for a way to form some kind of
coherent whole. The work I came up with uses the bells, wind
chimes and cymbals as instruments of invocation. The other
instruments are used in the so-called ritual itself before being
replaced by the sounds of the opening to end the work.
Yí Shì was written for the Norfolk Chamber Music Festival and the So Percussion Quartet.
