Fenway (2006)
for flute, clarinet/bass clarinet, electric guitar, double bass, piano also arranged for flute, oboe, viola, cello, piano
NOTES:
"Fenway" refers to the very famous and much-loved home of the Boston Red Sox. I have been a Red Sox fan since birth (my
father is the reason for this) and have seen a number of games there in person
(and, of course, countless more on the TV and radio). This is a work based on two songs that have
become official Red Sox “theme music”, heard many times everywhere from Fenway Park itself to the movie "Fever Pitch". "Dirty Water" by the Standells is, of course, a 1970s ode to Boston, when the water of the Charles River truly was dirty. This is the main source of thematic material;
“Tessie” by the Dropkick Murphys is also referenced a few times. This work is my ode to the city and the
baseball team I grew up with. It is
essentially 12-tone rock; there is a constant swing rhythm much like that of
“Dirty Water”, and it is often wild, crude, and loud. Creepy, sparse textures as well as an
extended lyrical passage offer brief interludes, but “Fenway” finishes with a
dissonant bang that is somehow incredibly ecstatic. “Fenway” is dedicated to Boston, the Red Sox and the NOW Ensemble, and also to
my father, who taught me to love the Red Sox.
